This summer has been a “Summer of Travel”, and a little over a week ago we returned from a 4-day trip to Wyoming, South Dakota, and Nebraska.
While in Alliance Nebraska, an overnight stop on our way back to Colorado, we visited Carhenge.
I bet most of you have heard of Stonehenge the “prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire, England, known for its stone circle structure” (Google AI).

Well the Carhenge is described as “Nebraska’s unique tribute to Stonehenge” (using old cars). You can read the history of the creation of this “roadside attraction” here – History of Carhenge, but here are a sampling of our photos from our visit to give you a virtual experience of seeing Carhenge!
I look forward to seeing Stonehenge someday when I visit the UK, but Carhenge was quite breathtaking in person. Very creative recycling of old cars!

Carhenge-what fun! I’ve been enjoying your travel blog posts, Tierney, even if I haven’t commented much on them. You’ve really gone all out! I bet you can’t wait to get back to your quilt studio in the Fall after such adventures!!!!
I find it interesting that John didn’t object to the Nebraska trek…remember, I’m from CO and ahem, we sometimes can get a bit snobby towards our flatlander/’Big Red’ (as in football) neighbor to the East. 😉
Full disclosure: one year hubby & I took a ‘literary tour’ of that state. Why? Willa Cather is one of my favorite authors and Red Cloud, Nebraska was one of our destinations along with experiencing the prairie lands named in her honor.

John did have a little Flatland arrogance but he kept it in check because I as just a wide eyed wondering person during the trip. More to come on our travels 🙂

The original Stonehenge was most impressive. I haven’t seen the car version. It was fun to see your pictures, though!

That made me smile, Tierney! What a whacky thing to do, and to be able to pull it off! I went to Stonehenge many years ago and remember being awed by the age and solidity of it.

Carhenge is giving me Mad Max vibes. I wonder what future archaeologists will think of it. “They revered their cars at a temple made of cars…” Not totally wrong. We do like our cars.

This made I larf, as we say in Devon. Stonehenge is about 2 hours up the A303 from me, we’d drive past in the 70’s on the way to (and home from!) family visits in London, about twice a year.

That is so much fun. Didn’t know car henge existed but I have been to the original many years ago. It is impressive. If you are interested in pre-history I would also recommend a trip to the Orkney Islands (off the coast of Scotland) to see Skara Brae and the ring of Brodgar

That’s so Mad Max! I’ve visited the original Stonehenge as a child, back when you were allowed into the site itself and could touch the stones. These days, you can only see it from a fair way back.

That is so cool! I have been to Stonehenge, but now I definitely need to visit Carhenge 🙂 I love roadside attractions very, very much. This one looks like it will be a pretty peak attraction 🙂
