John and I are going in the near future to visit his childhood friend and his wife. We are staying their home and I never show up as a guest as someone’s home without a gift (nor does John); and with some Instagram snooping I discovered they love craft beers and so I made them a set of Lagom Storage Bins, pattern Sotak Handmade.

These are the same bins I made a couple months ago for some friends (see post Lagom Storage Bins). After I made them the first time I was not sure I was going to make them again as they use two different types of interfacing (SF 101 and Fusible Fleece) and they seemed sort of tedious to make (but the pattern is well written).
But on second round of making these bins they are growing on me. I did discover that with the larger sizes you would be better off making them with a cotton canvas/linen canvas for more strength. I used quilting weight fabric and the largest one I made seems slightly “floppy”.
The first time I made them I only made the smallest size “X-small”). Here are the sizes they come in per the pattern designer’s Etsy shop:
This time I made them in three sizes – X-Small, Small, and Medium.
I found some cool craft beer themed fabric that my late husband Terry had selected (he loved craft beer, dogs, and flannel fabric; and a lot of his fabric stash as a quilter was in these themes):
Here are photos of the bins (and I love how nicely they stack together!):
I hope they like them! I have no idea how their home is decorated as I am visiting them for the first time; but I thought using the theme of something that interests them might be safe…
John also made a host gift – a cutting board for them:

Rounded corners is a new thing he is trying on his cutting boards.
We are feeling pretty proud of ourselves as we didn’t wait until the last minute to make these gifts!

Hello Tierney, Love seeing all your projects. I know they will love the Beer baskets. My Son is also into Craft Beer and has his own podcast about beer they may be interested in. It is call “Good Beer Matters’ ‘. He won an American and Global Pod Cast first place award a few years ago for his messages and interviews with Brewers around the world. He is also an Advanced Cicerone, and travels to Beer exhibitions to judge competitions. He has turned this “Non beer loving” Mom into one that enjoys a good Craft Beer. Now I will be on the lookout for some cool Beer Fabric! That was a great idea for their gift. I also will be ordering Quilt Folk Magazine to read your story. Congratulations and I am so glad in a very small way I was involved in your process and got to know you. Janet Storton

Thanks so much Janet, wonderful to hear from you and I will have to check out your son’s podcast! I love listening to podcasts while on my walks or while crafting. Congrats on his award! I was a non beer person until I moved to Seattle years ago and discovered craft beer. Awesome you are going to check out the Quiltfolk magazine and I still enjoy that little quilt wallhanging with the tree I made from your class and learned that awesome applique stitching 🙂

When I saw the German Old Ale pattern, I immediately thought of some knockwurst and sauerkraut. I was thankful for this post because I thought “This is great, the bins can hold a lot of knockwurst and sauerkraut. And there is a cutting board to put the food on.” Yeehaw.
Nah, seriously, I really like the bins and the special attention to detail that aligns with the interest of John’s friends. You are a good and gracious guest. No one I know would do that for me. So, if a friend does come to the house I turn the sprinklers on to get ’em. 🤣 John’s cutting board is really cool. I wish I could find one like it. Can’t find ones with this detail and uniqueness in stores.
Stay Creative.

Thanks so much I appreciate that and I think it would be a “hot mess” to put knockwurst etc in the fabric bins – ha!
John might sell them online someday, I’ll make an announcement if he gets his Etsy shop together. Thanks 🙂

Thank you, I had fun making them this time, much better than my first attempts. I was looking at all my novelty fabrics in my collection and think how they would translate to cute bins!
