This might be part 2 to my 6/15/24 monthly ScrapHappy post (see post ScrapHappy June 2024)…
My husband John worked on a “scrappy” project in June also: he built a raised bed with the scraps of pressure treated lumber from our deck rebuilding project in May (see post Guest Blogger Post: Managing Humans Demolishing and Rebuilding a Deck).
Here are photos of him building the raised bed in our backyard and setting up the automatic irrigation:
We originally had our backyard swing in this spot and John relocated the pavers and the swing to under the two large Aspen trees in our backyard:

Here’s the raised bed with the netting we added to hopefully protect our planting from the critters (animal and bug) that live in the open space behind our house:

I am pretty excited about the raised bed as now I can (perhaps) grow things like squash and greens where I needed a larger and deeper space than my upstairs deck garden allows.
Speaking of the upstairs deck garden, my container garden pots are filling out nice with foliage from the tomatoes, peppers, and herbs I am growing. I also added a pot of strawberries using a macrame hanger that my friend K made me.
We also added to planters that rest on the deck railings to the mix and for now I have seed starts there which I will transfer eventually to the raised bed. Then I will put some type of trailing flowers in those planters.

John set up automatic irrigation (watering) for all the pots and planters on the deck so it we are out of town they will get watered!

YaY! Get your hands in the dirt, girl!

Wow, wow, wow! I love the raised bed and that you have the netting for the bugs and also the metal screen on the lower section of your fenced part. Your plants in your pots on the upstairs deck is a great idea, especially when you don’t even have to water them. That mans so clever!

Thanks so much and we hope it works! So far I’ve made a couple dishes where I just went to the upstairs deck container garden for my herbs instead of the supermarket at that was awesome. Yes he is very clever, a keeper! 🙂

Thanks so much and yes no stress of asking someone to water when you are on vacation!

Yeah. That is a really novel approach. I’ll pass that on to my brother and gal who enjoy that type of gardening too.

Hey! My husband made our raised beds out of scrap lumber too! It was perfectly good wood the neighbors were just going to throw out after a kitchen remodel, so he dumpster-dived (dumpster-dove?) and nabbed it before it went away.

Smart man – and it was really free scraps as it was someone elses – nice! I am not sure of the conjugation of the verb dumpster-dive lol.

Nice, growing veggies is fun. In our veggie patch it´s a race to see who gets to eat the produce first, us or the bugs 🙂

I know! Darn bugs…and squirrels and rabbits! Hope you win it and get to eat the veggies first 🙂

It cracks me up that you are growing the same things as I am although we are in opposite seasons! This is the only time of year I can grow certain things because it’s cool enough and the insects are greatly reduced. My beans and tomatoes are flowering, the zucchini will flower soon, my oregano and basil are flourishing. I hope that very handsome raised bed will be all you hope for!

Well we can grow and think of the other waiting for their season to grow 🙂
Your garden sounds like it is filled with a bounty! I will share an update in the future, some of my seeds sprouted surprisingly fast in the new raised bed!
