Here is a follow up to my post from the end of September about running out of yarn towards the end of knitting a hat and using a variegated yarn to complete the hat – Ran Out of Yarn But the Hat Continues… .
As I mentioned in that post, adding the variegated yarn to the top of the hat makes it sort of look like an Icelandic sweater yoke ‘colorwork’ (well if you squint your eyes, ha!). In addition to the unusual finish of the hat, I added my first pom-pom on top of a hat using the variegated yarn.
First here is the hat at my favorite part of knitting a hat – using the double pointed needles at the crown/end of knitting a hat:

And here is the photo I always take before I finish a hat – me wearing the hat with the double pointed needles:

(I am holding the yarn in my hand, not the pom-pom)
And here is the finished hat with my first pom-pom that I made using a Pom-pom Maker:
Postscript
Speaking of hats, I gave my friend K a hat I knitted when we visited her in California early September for a California roadtrip (I’ll blog about that California roadtrip we took with her and her husband in a future post).
The hat is knitted from a cool rainbow variegated wool yarn.

Yes it’s the one hat pattern I know. Perhaps someday I will try a different pattern!

I love the new hat…it really does resemble a sweater design 😍 Hey nothing wrong with one hat pattern when you make them well!

I would say why get a new pattern when the existing one is perfect? Just saying. I love the playful look of the pompom and the colors are great. I find it interesting that you like DP needles as your favorite part of the hat. I will do almost anything to avoid knitting with DP!

Thanks Claudia and I do love this pattern. I really love the pom-pom and I might make more pom-poms in the future. Once you get the hang of the DP needles they are fun! (Or I am insane, ha!) 🙂

You know, I can manage DP, but I don’t like them. I think it’s past trauma with them! and maybe I need to revisit the technique, because it is extremely useful.

The colours on the hat are lovely and as someone who also only has one hat pattern I promise not to judge. Though I am in awe of your double pointed needle knitting, my pattern is single points and you have to put a seam up the side 🙂

Thanks so much Helen and thanks for understanding the endless repeat of the same hat pattern, ha 🙂
Double pointed needles are fun to use once you get the hang of them.

Thanks so much and it is just ongoing silliness with the double pointed needles – it’s the little joys in life 🙂

I agree with Claudia. Why bother trying a new pattern when you enjoy this one? You make it look different every time with choice of yarn. I’m about to start a hat on dpns with a free Drops pattern.

Your first pompom is perfection! Just the right size. And what a beautiful hat to wear on a couple of wet walks on the coast next weekend. So excited to see you and my favorite chef!🧑🍳

Thanks so much for your pom-pom support 🙂
Yes that is a great idea but my poor pom-pom will get soaked, ha! The chef is getting ready!

It really does look like a mini colourwork jumper! Maybe I should add pompoms to my next one 😆
