Studio

In the Midst of Chaos on the 2nd Floor

My studio is located on the second floor of the house and is located in the former “Primary Bedroom” (I discovered there is a shift from using the term “Master Bedroom” to “Primary Bedroom” in the world of real estate) – see post A “New” Studio about the change to the Primary Bedroom for my studio in Spring 2022.

The studio has a carpet which is not in the best condition and for a couple years I’ve dreamed of getting rid of the carpet and putting in some type of hard flooring.

See the ripples in the carpet

We found a great deal on high quality wood laminate flooring and John plans to start working on removing the carpeting and then laying the new floor down this weekend, so it was time to clear out my studio.

Oh my. There was more stuff in my studio than I realized and we had to scatter the stuff all around the 2nd floor to include the primary bathroom closet, the upstairs guest bedroom/office, our bedroom, and the upstairs hallway.

It took me 2+ days to get the stuff moved out of the studio. It started slowly with moving in some fabric to the guest bedroom:

But then more and more stuff went into the guest bedroom…

Then it grew to this…

Until it finally ended up like this:

Here is the evolution of cleaning out the studio in photos:

The last image above shows how icky the carpeting is and why it needs to go!

The hallway is filled with stuff and it looks like chaos upstairs!

I’ll share photos again when the project is done and I will surprise you on what the flooring looks like as I forgot to take a photo of the large stacks of flooring currently in the Primary Bathroom closet.

  1. It’s like moving house, but without the new house to put things into! I recently rearranged my sewing room, and I *still* can’t find some stuff. However, the new layout is a revelation, and much easier to keep clean. Yours will soon be even better than it was before!

  2. Oh! Cannot wait to see your new flooring. It will give your studio a whole new look. Yeah, the chaos of moving stuff out is always part of the process, but getting it all settled back in will be fun (maybe)! I still have stuff to move back into my space, but I seem to have filled up all the space . . .

  3. Why is it that when one displaces things they seem to take up three times the volume?! I think you are very brave to move the contents of your studio twice (out and then back in). But the new floor will be worth it. John is also brave!

  4. I am in the same boat as far as needing a new floor. Our house was built in the 1970s as a weekend place with very cheap indoor/outdoor carpeting used. When we moved in 15 years ago, I pulled up all the carpet, and the lining of it had crumbled. We put down new plywood and painted it, in all the upstairs rooms except my sewing room, that still has just one layer of old plywood. We were going to fix it “someday soon” but in the meantime I have added so many shelves and tables to the room. I dread ever pulling everything out to fix the floor!

And if I ever do, it would be a good time to repaint….

  5. I spotted several items that are in my studio as well–ha! And my son-in-law, who is a builder/developer, now refers to the “master bedroom” as the “owner’s suite”. Whatever!

  6. I love all the window light you get. You know how bad I feel for what you are going through moving everything out. I still have boxes in my spare bedroom from remodeling the kitchen which still isn’t finished. You will love the new floor especially when thread gets on it. I wish our bedrooms had it too but that will be down the road. I can’t wait to see your finished room!

  7. It’s amazing how much stuff accumulates when you craft and or sew. Your stash looks so tidy though. Quite impressive.

We have bamboo, cork or tile floors in all our rooms at this point. Wall to wall carpeting has a short life-span, and is really challening when you have animals. We have a few area rugs to cozy things up, but I don’t think I’ll have wall to wall carpeting again. I’m so happy for you, Tierney. Getting the boards on sale and having live-in talent is pretty special.

I love a good “reveal” so I’m standing by. xo

  8. Interesting:

” Is the term going away?
Recent reports show that home builders are attempting to phase-out the phrase “master bedroom” in favor of “owner’s bedroom.” The phrase “master bedroom” isn’t derived from plantation farming and slavery. Still, a 2013 survey of major D.C. home builders found that 60% of them have ceased using the phrase. The word master is also inherently male, making the term “master bedroom” gendered as well. Add those to things you never thought you’d learn on a real estate blog. While the phrase hasn’t gone away just yet, the term could easily change within the next ten years. Regardless of what it’s called, a large bedroom with a private bath is a staple of the American home.”
