Experimenting with Making Golf Shoe Bags

John saw all the drawstring bags I’ve made and asked me if I could make him a golf shoe bag for when he goes golfing (one of his main hobbies besides woodworking).

We found a bolt of nylon fabric to line the golf shoe bag and I altered the Sotak Handmade pattern I use for drawstring bags to make it longer for a golf shoe bag. After I made a test bag, I made John a bag.

The nylon liner in the bag is backed with fusible fleece that I had to carefully iron from the fusible fleece side to adhere to the nylon without damaging the nylon with heat. The nylon lining will allow John to easily wipe out any dirt from his golf shoes that gets in the bag.

John told me that “men like long drawstring cords” (Perhaps he secretly did a national survey of preference, ha! And what about women golfers – do they have drawstring preference??!!?!) and so I used long cords used for drawstrings on clothing for the drawstrings for the golf shoe bags.

We are going to give the test bag to his favorite cousin who is also a golfer. They should look adorable on the golf course with their handmade golf shoe bags – ha!

  1. I will ask my lady golfer friend about her drawstring preferences…as a non-golfer, I like them to fit about exactly inside the channels when the bag is open, so that there aren’t dangling strings to tangle with whatever is going inside (a knotty nightmare if it is a knitting project)!

  4. I had a golf shoe bag back in the day that looked more ilke the box pouches that are being made now with a zipper and a handle. I think your idea is much easier and simpler. Personally I’d want a medium length drawstring – not too short, not too long. Lining it with nylon was a great idea!

  6. I like this. Practical and good looking. Do golf shoes still have metal spikes (I think I might be dating myself) because when I played about 40 years ago they still did. I don’t remember how I carried my shoes (probably just threw them in the trunk of the car…)

    1. I remember the metal spikes and no they seem to have gotten rid of the metal spikes in the newer shoes and they are some type of plastic or other manufactured materials. I golfed for a little bit but I only go now to be polite if John really needs a partner (thank goodness he is a friend who loves to regularly play!) 🙂

  9. I’m not a lady golfer, but I do make drawstring bags for all sorts of uses, and I’m firmly in the ‘only as long as it needs to be to open’ group. Perhaps there’s a practical reason for it to be longer that we’re not aware of! You did find the perfect fabric print for it, and I’d be tempted to use my large stock of PUL (waterproof and breathable) to line it, rather than nylon, just because I have it. Hmmmm. Now you’ve given me an idea!

      1. Polyurethane laminate. It’s ok to work with, but if you want it to stay waterproof you can’t pin it, you have to use clips. Good for toiletry bags and so on.
