Our mudroom (please see link if you are outside the U.S. and unfamiliar with this term), was fairly generic – a place to do our laundry, use the utility sink, store some shoes, and to hang clothes as they dried. It had generic white metal racks from a home improvement store.
It is the way you enter our home from the garage and the first area of our home visitors might see if we bring them in through the garage (i.e. if we pick them up from the airport in our car, etc.)
John decided to make our mudroom a lot more interesting by building storage and adding convenience items.
The first thing he made was a topper for our washers and dryer to make laundry easier to fold (see post Never Bored When Making Boards (From the Woodshop)):

This was a “game changer” when it came to laundry folding!
Next he made a bench with shoe storage so when entering or leaving the mudroom you had a convenient place to deal with your shoes (see post From the Woodshop: A New Bench and Beginning of the Mudroom Remodel):

You can see a little of the white metal shelving we had before and the hideous brown old storage unit to the right that we had.
After the bench was complete, he worked over the past 6 months (sporadically), to complete the rest of the mudroom storage build out. Here are some photos of John’s work in progress:
And Mike the Miniature Schnauzer had many trips to the home improvement stores to get supplies!
Mike loves being in his box riding around in a shopping cart!
And finally here is the completed mudroom!
Definitely worth the wait!
John designed the entire storage piece himself not using any formal plans, just inspiration from images online and YouTube videos!

I need this… just saying. Wow! Beautiful work.

Thanks so much, I was pleasantly surprised at how cool it came out. I thought it would just be a basic storage set up and then he wowed me 🙂

Yes, I do know what a Mudroom is but I didn’t know it was also a Laundry. I thought Laundry was a different space.
Here you might have an enclosed porch where you decant your outer wear/shoes. I don’t have an enclosed porch but I do have shelter on the porch with wall on 3 sides. But certainly no where to sit to take of outer wear/shoes.
And my laundry is basically too small to swing a cat in – and anything wet like “rained upon” ends up either over the opened washer or in the shower stall.
(I may not be able to post this – WP has done strange things to “post comment” menu)

Not all mudrooms have the laundry. It is a combo room I should have pointed out. A mudroom room really is to be a transition place to take off your muddy shoes/boots before going into the house. I see your post, thanks for your comment 🙂

He’s done a fab job there! We tend to use the word Bootroom here as it was the space you entered after your ride to rid yourself of all the paraphernalia like muddy boots. We still need it with all the dog stuff. I think they have more outdoor things than we do!

Thanks so much! Ah – Bootroom – makes sense! We also have our laundry in the bootroom too 🙂

Simply Wow! Your customized mudroom is amazing, Tierney. Does Mike like to hop on the bench and offer his opinion on which shoes you should wear?

Thanks so much! Mike has yet to hope on the bench and provide guidance, ha! 🙂

Wow, this is awesome. He’s great at what he does. Does he build anything to sell online?

Thanks and he was going to open an Etsy shop and sell cutting boards online but his job got too busy. Maybe in the future, he’s thinking about ways to generate extra income when he retires 🙂

Oh my goodness! What a transformation! I am especially envious of having a special place for the vacuum cleaner, which is such an awkward thing it never seems to fit anywhere.

Thanks so much – I know – it is like an entirely different room and I was teasing John I loved it so much I was moving into it! I just need some type of small mattress for the bench to sleep on, ha! Yes that was my request – a place to tuck away the pesky vacuum cleaner! 🙂

I love the elegance of good storage, and John has done a wonderful job. I see that Mike supervises purchases; Mouse does something similar but is too large for the carts, so tends to stroll along beside on his leash. My own mudroom is just the back end of the garage, but I have given myself a long folding table across the washer and under-counter fridge and freezers. One of these days the Husband will sell the massive motorbike, and then I’ll be demanding all that space for storage…

Thank you and I agree! I had to add the baskets on top as the piece was like a nice piece of furniture, almost too good for the laundry/mudroom! So I figured I’d make it look even fancier, ha!
Mouse sounds like a good human manager!
Finger crossed you get that pesky motorbike out of the way so you can have more storage 🙂
